Grip, Due North could be ’hottest’

A couple of weeks ago Ð so long ago the hapless Leafs were actually winning a playoff game during the conversation Ð Lowe Roche president Brett Marchand was describing Downtown Partners as "the hottest agency in Canada." Today, he might get an argument considering Grip Ltd. managed to grab the best chunk of Bell Canada business from Cossette Communication Group in the form of the English-language creative account and mid-size Toronto agency Due North Communications continued its winning streak by landing the H&R Block assignment in a creative shootout with two other agencies. . . . . .In the ad world, everybody seems to know what you’ve been up to, win or lose, if not exactly how you got there. At last week’s inaugural Legends of Advertising event in Toronto, the social libations were flowing and ad types were doing their best to ferret out information on the competition. Peter Jeffery, chief executive of GJP Partners, was seen attempting to drill corporate secrets out of two Due North executives. The duo were reportedly impressed that the GJP chief could rhyme off the agency’s last five wins, a streak that started just over a year ago. "We were sort of comparing notes," said Mr. Jeffery. "We had that amazing hot streak in ’ 97 - ’ 98 where everything that we pitched we won, and now Due North seems to be on that streak.". . .
