The People’s Yenta, Ever Ever Watchful For Chutzpah
The Toronto Star, February 10, 2004
Hello, and welcome to The People’s Yenta. How are you today? As good as can be expected? I know, I know. The way I see it, it could be worse. Now, if you don’t mind, we’ve got a lot of things on our plate. Number One. Have you seen the banana ad? The one on the subway trains? It’s a picture of a banana, only it’s not lying down flat, okay? It’s rocked back and pointing upwards at an angle. The angle is the exact opposite of erectile dysfunction. This is one functional banana. Only it’s all covered with spots. If you saw it, you would say, "This banana is way past its best-before date." In big letters, the ad says, "Get tested." Then it says, "Not all sexually transmitted infections are this easy to spot." (Spot. Spots. Get it?) "Many have no symptoms. You may be at risk. Get a fast, free and confidential test by calling The House Community Health Centre." Apparently every young person hasn’t got the idea yet that the only way to avoid getting a pox in their pants is by not fooling around even slightly. Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder? Like it’s their hearts we’re worried about. Anyway, this is who the ad is aimed at – young people. Phone number for The House: 416-927-7171. Online: ppt.on.ca. It’s not only the funniest ad I ever saw, it’s the funniest anything. Talk about getting to the point. Hey, you down there in the Star’s advertising department. Do yourself a favour. Do everybody a favour. Call The House and get the ad and run it for free. It’s about time there was something funny and to the point in the Star.
